Towards Trustworthy Aerospace Systems: An Experience Report

چکیده

Building modern aerospace systems is highly demanding. They should be extremely dependable. They must offer service without interruption (i.e., without failure) for a very long time — typically years or decades. Whereas ”five nines” dependability, i.e., a 99.999 % availability, is satisfactory for most safety-critical systems, for on-board systems it is not. Faults are costly and may severly damage reputations. Dramatic examples are known. Fatal defects in the control software of the Ariane-5 rocket and the Mars Pathfinder have led to headlines in newspapers all over the world. Rigorous design support and analysis techniques are called for. Bugs must be found as early as possible in the design process while performance and reliability guarantees need to be checked whenever possible. The effect of fault diagnosis, isolation and recovery must be quantifiable. Tailored effective techniques exist for specific system-level aspects. Peer reviewing and extensive testing find most of the software bugs, performance is checked using queueing networks or simulation, and hardware safety levels are analysed using an profiled Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) approach. Fine. But how is the consistency between the analysis results ensured? What is the relevance of a zerobug confirmation if its analysis is based on a system view that ignores critical performance bottlenecks? There is a clear need for an integrated, coherent approach! This is easier said than done: the inherent heterogeneous character of on-board systems involving software, sensors, actuators, hydraulics, electrical components, etc., each with its own specific development approach, severely complicates this.

TADL - An Architecture Description Language for Trustworthy Component-Based Systems

Existing architecture description languages mainly support the specification of the structural elements of the system under design. These languages have either only a limited support or no support to specify non-functional requirements. In a component-based development of trustworthy systems, the trustworthiness properties must be specified at the architectural level. Analysis techniques should...

Towards an Engineering Approach to Component Adaptation

Component adaptation needs to be taken into account when developing trustworthy systems, where the properties of component assemblies have to be reliably obtained from the properties of its constituent components. Thus, a more systematic approach to component adaptation is required when building trustworthy systems. In this paper, we illustrate how (design and architectural) patterns can be use...

The COMPASS Approach: Correctness, Modelling and Performability of Aerospace Systems

We report on a model-based approach to system-software coengineering which is tailored to the specific characteristics of critical onboard systems for the aerospace domain. The approach is supported by a System-Level Integrated Modeling (SLIM) Language by which engineers are provided with convenient ways to describe nominal hardware and software operation, (probabilistic) faults and their propa...

Evaluating Recommendation Systems

Recommender systems are now popular both commercially and in the research community, where many approaches have been suggested for providing recommendations. In many cases a system designer that wishes to employ a recommendation system must choose between a set of candidate approaches. A first step towards selecting an appropriate algorithm is to decide which properties of the application to fo...

Static Analysis of Autocoded Software for Aerospace Systems

Embedded software-based control systems are commonly constructed using model-based design environments such as MATLAB/SimulinkTM from MathWorks. These environments allow the system designer to establish critical properties ensuring the reliability of the system (stability, disturbance rejection, etc.) directly at the model level, using a rich mathematical toolset. However, the software implemen...
